Last weekend a small group of Llandaff Juniors and the Welsh Squad attended the 95th International Ghent May Regatta (10/11 May 2014).
Despite the dreadful blustery wet weather, the weekend saw some top class International racing, to which the Welsh High Performance Development Squad (HPDS) and Welsh Academi Members (WA) and a small group of Llandaff Juniors, in the Junior Development Squad, aiming for the Welsh squad, were right up there in the mix.
Saturday racing medal results included Llandaff RC’s Jack Thomas (HPDS) winning Silver in the Senior 4x behind Leander, with other squad members Robinson CCRC, Barras CURC, Massey CURC and Bronze in the Senior Mens 2x with Robinson CCRC, again being pipped to the post behind 2 Leander crews.
Llandaff RC’s Emily Doherty (WA) came home with Bronze in the Womens Senior 2x with HPDS rower Helen Roberts CCRC.
Sunday saw more wins and three more medals for Jack Thomas with other HPDS members winning:
Gold in Mens Senior U23 4x with Massey CURC. Whittacker CURC and Barrass CURC, Bronze in the Mens Senior 4x with Massey CURC, Barras CURC and Robinson CCRC and Bronze U23 Mens Senior 2x with Massey CURC.
Other LRC members of the Welsh Academi who competed were Rhys Dutfield who came in 11th out of 56 starters on Saturday in the J18 mens 1x, a strong performance and certainly moving in the right direction and Hannah Foxley who came 4th in the Womens 4x on Sunday with Doherty LRC, Pip Thomas MON and HPDS member Imogen Evans CCRC.
Our Llandaff juniors, also did well with 15 year old, Hetty Palmer coming in 6th out of 41 in WJ16 1x. Hetty also raced up an age group, and did the 2K in under 9mins with a time of 8.55.
Izzy Peters and Alys Howells, both aged 15 and also raced up an age group, in WJ16 2x, came in 30th, they met very challenging wind conditions on the Sunday but gained valuable experience to take to National Schools Regatta next week.
Congratulations to all.
