The stretch of the
Taff that Llandaff rows is approximately 1300 metres long with
two obtuse bends in its length.

BY-LAWS FOR USE OF THE RIVER
PLEASE READ THESE CAREFULLY
- The rule of the
road applies to the river which is a three-lane highway. You
travel upstream on the clubhouse side and downstream on the
weir side. The centre of the river may only be used whilst overtaking.
- Exit and entrance
to the landing stage may only be done with boats pointing upstream.
- TURNING on the river
is ONLY ALLOWED downstream of the road bridge or upstream of
the 750m mark (upstream of the rocks on the bank). No waiting
crew may turn ahead of a turning crew without first seeking
the turning crew’s permission.
- Boat turning on
the course (between the 1000m Start and Finish) must be clockwise.
- Crews resting on
the river may only do so downstream of the road bridge and upstream
of the 750m mark. Resting crews must remain tucked into the
bank.
- It is the sole responsibility
of a crew or sculler to warn other boats approaching astern
by shouting “AHEAD” or “TAKE A LOOK”.
The slower crew must REPEAT THE WARNING UNTIL IT IS ACKNOWLEDGED.
The slower crew should assist the overtaking crew by keeping
tight to the bank where possible. The overtaking crew should
always pass on the outside and give clear water to the slower
crew. At no time should more than one boat simultaneously overtake
a slower boat. Coaches in sculling boats should also abide by
this rule.
- The Captain of
the boat is the STROKE in coxed boats and the STEERSPERSON in
coxless boats (unless otherwise nominated).
- It is the Boat Captains
responsibility to ensure that: -
- The boat is logged
out and back in.
- The Coxswain
is wearing a lifejacket.
- There is a securely
and correctly fitted bow ball.
- The heel restraints
are all in working order.
- Any damage to
the boat or equipment is logged in the Damage Book and that
it is also verbally reported to the Club Captain or Vice Captain.
- Club boats may not
be used if any part of the landing stage is covered by the river.
- PLAY boats may not
go above the road bridge.
- During poor visibility
and after sunset (as stated in the ARA Water Safety Code) ALL
boats are to show effective lighting. A steady or flashing white
or green light fitted to the bow and a steady or flashing red
light on the stern. Lights must be secured to the boat, not
the riggers, oarspersons, or Coxswain. They must point along
the line of the boat. The forward light must be visible with
ease for a distance of at least 150 metres.
- Only competent
scullers and coxless crews are permitted to use club boats after
dark. After dark all steerspersons must be competent.
- In the event of
an accident written reports from all parties involved must be
submitted to the Club Secretary within 48 hours.
- When boating or
landing all boats must use the furthest available upstream part
of the landing stage. Boats must not be left at the stage unnecessarily.
- Any crew not complying
with ALL rules will be reported to their Club Captain/committee
who will decide what disciplinary action is appropriate.
