Llandaff Success at Hereford

Congratulations to the two Andy's. Andy Pratt and Andy Quinn rowed and won against an experienced Hereford double after their original opposition had scratched on Saturday.

On Sunday Andy Pratt went on to win his Novice event in a very competitive Men's Novice 1x event.

Immediately after the singles final on Sunday, the two Andy's were part of a mixed 4 that narrowly lost to a powerful IM2 mixed crew. Unfortunately it was not meant to be this time.

Hannah Wins at Henley

Hannah Patterson, representing Llandaff Rowing Club won Seniors coxed fours at Henley Womens Regatta last Sunday.

Hannah although still a junior raced in the senor event with 4 other juniors ( including cox,) from Sir William Borlase School and St Pauls school.

In the the semi final they beat a crew from Southampton university by 4 lengths this crew contained two women who were winners at the regatta and gold medalists from the senior national Championships in 2010.
In the Final they were racing Reading University the crew contained a mix of women who had been senior Gold medalists from last year's national championships and a woman who until recently had been in the GB European eight. During the final the Reading University crew lead by 1/2 length through the 1st 1000 metres the junior crew mounted a sustained attack during the last 500 metres drawing level with 5 or so strokes to go and winning the race by 2 feet.

[b:245ffb1754]Comment from Ian Shore[/b:245ffb1754]: [i:245ffb1754]I have been coaching for 26 years and have had many wins at Henley womens regatta , for juniors to step up to a senior event and race in such a manner was not only one of the best races of this regatta but one of the classics in the history of Henley Womens Regatta. This showed great strength of character and self belief whilst under enormous pressure and as a coach it was a privilege to watch and be involved in.

I believe this is the 1st time a Welsh club has won a senior event at Henley Womens Regatta in the regattas 24 year history. ( Welsh clubs and schools have won junior events). I have only been able to check the records for the last 11 years.

Hannah won junior quadruple sculls at the same regatta in 2010 - to win 2 Henley medals in a career would be considered to be good to win 2 in consecutive years is exceptional especially as a junior.

This has undoubtedly given her a great platform for final GB trials next week.[/i:245ffb1754]

Llandaff Success at National Masters Championships

Llandaff Rowing Club brought home 7 Gold Medals at British Rowing National Masters Championships held at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierpoint, Nottingham, on Sunday 12 June. This is one of the premiere veterans events of the season and brings together the cream of British masters rowing in the UK, with a new record entry of 550 crews.

Llandaff’s Master Squad had five crews training for this event, D4+, WC4+, WCN4+, G2x and G1x.
Sadly, after months of hard training the D4+ crew, Olaf Zielger, John McTeague, John Llewellyn, Gary Brace and cox Mary Yee, were not able to compete due to injury.

[b:1ce5678d77]Women Novice win ‘Gold’[/b:1ce5678d77]
The women novice coxed four finally achieved their goal, by winning ‘gold’ and losing their novice status. A ‘C’ crew having to race ‘B’, they put on a good show, in treacherous weather conditions, but with good crew spirit, they joked ‘ We Welsh like rain’.
The crew Laila Larsen (stroke), Ellie Fry (3), Christine Hughes (2), Sarah Hebson (bow) and coach/cox Mary Yee raced to victory at a time of 4.23.72. Beating their opponents, Bewdley RC (4.31.73) and Lea RC (4.50.28).

[b:1ce5678d77]Master G2x achieves Gold[/b:1ce5678d77]
Steven Denley-Hill and Martyn Kelly won gold racing against Nottingham RC in the final. Their time 4.20.69 beating Nottingham by 0.18.05 (4.38.74).
They said, they had a comfortable race, against the heavy rain and wind.
Unfortunately, Steven attempting the G1x later that day, only managed 4th place.

[b:1ce5678d77]Great attempt by the senior women[/b:1ce5678d77]
Only just getting together this season, the WC4+ Tracey Wilkinson, Sue Hoddell, Sherlie Richards, Dawn Brace and cox Rosin Willmot, gave it their best shot, and came in 4th. Talking after the race, they said they were pleased with the result, a good benchmark to work from and are on the right pathway to future success.

Peter Ashley

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Peter Ashley. Peter was a stalwart member of Llandaff Rowing Club for over 50 years, having been an enthusiastic competitor in his time as well as Captain and President of the Club.
He was also Chairman of the Llandaff Society of Watermen. As a vice president of the club he was always keen to be involved in the day to day running of the Club and, until his health prevented it, was a regular at monthly committee meetings.
Peter was very keen to follow the success of the Club and to offer timely and wise words of advice to committee and officers alike. He followed the progress of the club closely right up until his death. Llandaff Rowing Club mourns the passing of such a great character and a devoted member.
We offer our deepest sympathies to Peter’s family at this sad time.
For those wishing to attend Peter’s funeral, the arrangements have been confirmed as follows:

Tuesday 22nd March 2011

12.45pm – Church Service at St Catwgs, Church Street, Pentyrch, CF15 9QF
02.15PM – Crematorium Lodge, Coychurch, Bridgend, CF25 6AB
Refreshments afterwards at Llandaff Rowing Club
For those attending, the family have requested that Club blazers and ties be worn.

Welsh Rowing - Meeting at Llandaff Rowing Club

Welsh Rowing is proposing some changes in its constitution which will be put before the Council meeting in March, along with some variations to its bye-laws.
The chair and vice-chair of the Board, Chris Jenkins and Caroline Spanton, will be at Llandaff Rowing Club on the evening of Tuesday 22 February to discuss these changes with any club member who would like to come along.
The Board is currently actively engaged in a series of discussions on the whole future of rowing in Wales at all levels, and if you have views on this, the evening will also be a good forum in which to express them. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm – we’re very grateful to the club for agreeing to host it, we hope to see a good turnout and enjoy a lively evening.

Bernie Gets A Gong

Llandaff RC was pleased to hear of the MBE awarded Bernie Plain, one of our long standing members. Bernie received the honour for services to athletics.

Bernie was one of Wales' best middle and long distance runners, just missing out on a medal when he finished fourth in the 1974 European Marathon championship. He is still the holder of the UK 20 mile track record of 1:40:34.6

Bernie also ran in one of the most dramatic 10,000m races in 1973, Dave Bedford broke the world record and Bernie was third and, apart from the first three, Bedford lapped every other runner in the race.

Although never a rower Bernie has, along with a determined band of runners, used the club as a base for training. Those up early enough on weekends can see them heading off in all weathers.

Bernie enjoys the social life as well and will often be seen in the bar for a pint and a chat.

Congratulations from all at LRC.
